Chicken Dog

As you all know by now, we have a St. Bernard named Luke. He weights around 150 pounds. He protects the family with all of his might. He can scare off anyone that wants to deliver a package, or read our electric meter. He is forocious.........Until it thunders. He is such a big CHICKEN!

So early this morning we had a storm. Nothing that would shake the house or blow over a small goat, just your run of the mill thunder storm.  This big baby stratched at the door and whined until I let him in the house. Hubby had already left for work so I though, "What can it hurt?"
He acts really good inside. He just lays around like a rug. You have to watch sometimes, you could easily step on him.

Well, I went back to bed. He just came in and layed down in the bedroom. No problem. Then the smell hit me. Have you ever smelled a  wet dog. It's not a good smell. My whole bedroom started to smell like wet dog. YUCK! So I thought I will just go to sleep and not notice the smell. We have a concrete floor, so I don't have to worry about him getting anything dirty.

I was just starting to doze off to sleep when the heavy breathing started. You all know what I mean. The unmistakeable sound of a dog who is hot, panting. It went on and on. I looked up and at the foot of my bed, Luke was setting there watching me sleep.

"Luke? What are you doing?"

Tail wagged, panting stopped.

I laid back down. Started to go back to sleep again. Pant, pant, pant.  I looked back at the foot of the bed. Luke stared back at me. Panting.  "Stop it!" Head went down, and panting stopped.

I just start to go to sleep. Then the worst sound came from the end of the bed.  The sound of LICKING! AAAAUUUUGGGGGG!!!!!!! That's it! The rain had stopped the dog went back outside!

So unil next time,

Small Farm Girl, sleep deprived.

That's funny. Our St. Bernard was also scared of storms. The only difference was she had to be under the covers with us!

Thanks for the comments guys! I AM glad he didn't want to sleep in the bed with me.

MDR-That is awful! when we were given Luke, he chased a baby calf into a corner. He just wanted to play. Hubby had to take a buggy whip to him to get him to stop. It sounds mean, but he never did chase another calf. If he did, he would have had to leave the farm.

That's hilarious! The visuals were there throughout your entire post. Gotta love him. I've got one scared of the thunder and gunshots...but that's understandable..she's a pound puppy..now 12 yrs old.

poor you and poor Luke! Seems the bigger they are the harder they fall. Sorry for his storm fright. My Mom's oversized Pomeranian has storm fear and barks for HOURS at the slightest rumble of thunder. Its nerve wracking...for him and us.
