Back In My Day...........

Every Thursday my parents and I go out for breakfast.  It's a nice time to catch up and see how they are doing. (although I call them every night and they only live 10 mins from me.) This past Thursday my uncle and aunt joined us.  It was nice to sit and talk to everyone.  As we were talking, my dad and my uncle started reminiscing about how it was when they were growing up back in a hollar in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.  Talk about some GREAT stories!!!!  As I sat there and soaked it all in, an idea came to me.  How nice would it be if everyone could learn from these stories???  Right then and there I asked them if we can get together, every so often, and just tell stories.  They liked the idea so we decided to get together that night.

I brought along a pen and paper.  As soon as they started talking, I realized I need to get some kind of recording device.  My little stubby fingers couldn't write that fast and I didn't want to miss anything.  I'm still sorting stories out.  There were stories about fishing and pulling logs off of the hills with horses.  Stories about getting scared while out hunting.  They told stories about how they went to school in a one room school house and how they had to walk so far to get there. (Yes, I asked them if they had to do it bare footed, in the snow, up hill both ways. :-)

Anyway, my plan is to write  some down of the stories that they told.  One reason is so that you can read how it was.  Another reason is so that I can have these stories from my family.  Ether way, it should be interesting to read. Expect stories soon.

So until next time,

Small Farm Girl, recorder.

Love hearing stories. Look forward to it

Sounds like those stories would make a wonderful book -- maybe titled something like Appalachian Memories. You could include recipes for food and herbal remedies.

I wouldn't miss that golden opportunity. I look back now and wished I had asked more and listened better. Some of the last of the older generation's died years ago. My grandmother would tell me stories about things but being young and silly I didn't listen like I should have. She was the last one "standing" in the end and many many stories died with her. I would give just about anything to have her tell me all those stories.
Yep you need a recorder of some kind. Take advantage of their knowledge. I can promise that if you don't you will have heartfelt regrets.

SMF,

It's great to get together with family and share these stories. I always love listening to these stories. Can't wait to read about your families stories.

What a lovely idea! I will be very interested in hearing their stories. My and my husbands parents are the kind that abandon a few of their children when their 18, and keep their favorites. I long for the family togetherness that you have with yours. Our little family of three is a tight group as a result, and I long to have grandchildren some day to reinstate much needed family traditions. I dont know what is wrong with the parents of my generation, but I dont think self centered would be very far from the mark, Im afraid.

Take the opportunity to make a record of your family memories before it is too late. I wanted to record our family memories but could never find the right 'window' of time in which to do so, and now all the older members of the family are no longer with me, although they live on in my heart. So, record those stories, and then pass them on to us via your blog!

Would love to hear your stories too!!!!!

That's one of the reasons I'm doing this. I don't want the memories to disappear.

I'm excited to share them.
