Getting Scary

The garden, this year, is a bust.  Not that things didn't grow.  Ohhhhh noooooo!  Things grew great!  The deer were very happy that my tomatoes grew great!  They thought they were tasty too!  We haven't had one red tomato out of our garden. (not counting the cherry tomatoes) The deer eat them when they are green.  We haven't been able to keep them out of the garden.  The deer also ate the beans.  It's a bad time for us to fail in the garden area.

It's getting scary out there folks.  The world is one big powder keg getting ready to blow.  I feel it could happen at any time.  The things going on over seas are one thing, but the things happening on our own soil is something else.  The "feel" is just not right.  No respect for anyone or anything.  People are not respecting authority and authority is not respecting the people.  It could get ugly.

In fact, I was told by Country Girl, that there are rumors going around about something called a "Purge" here in my own local city.  If you have never heard of this, it's where people will do anything that they want for 12 hours. Looting, stealing, burning, raping, and possibly murder.   It could get bad.  This "Purge" is suppose to happen on the 30th of this month.  We shall see if anything actually happens.

It's times like these, when I hear all of the stuff going on in the world, that I look at how I could improve on being prepared.  I have a job now, so I have to think about what I would do if something happened while I was at work.  I'm sure most people have thought about the same thing.  It's just coming more to the front of our thoughts when we see what's going on in the world.

This makes one wonder, will this ever stop?  Will the powder keg blow?  Or, will things just pass over and go back to where the people can trust one another?  Will it ever get to where the people can trust the government again?  Only time will tell.

So until next time,

Small Farm Girl, watching

I have a fence around my garden, but that is not enough to keep the deer and raccoons out. We put a temporary electric fence around the crops such as corn that that the critters like to eat. The solar fence charger worked just fine this year. I have also heard that deer do not have very good depth perception. so if a second fence is placed a few feet outside the regular fence the deer can't tell whether they can jump it or not. Hope this helps.

I made a long fence around the garden out of pallets and have not had any deer in there in several years. They could easily jump it but it messes up their ability to see what they are jumping into. It keeps out groundhogs as I have old roofing around the base but so far coons come over it.
I have come to the conclusion that there are way too many people and too many of anything lowers the value. I think this is the root of the problem.

I wouldn't worry too much about the "purge" rumors. It's based off a horrid couple of movies and meant to cause a panic. But I think it's been proven as being fake.

We don't have a problem with deer eating our vegetables any more, but we lost a lot of produce to the chickens last year. This year we properly fenced the veg plot and no chickens got in, but then the weather turned peculiar, and stayed peculiar for weeks and weeks, the result being no tomato harvest, no bean harvest, madly growing squash, and everything else drowning in a sea of weeds. So, not a successful year here either.

I would not call us preppers as such, but we are self sufficient with food, and our lifestyle would help keep us afloat for awhile if things got dire. I think that all we can do is keep going, and keep smiling! Vx

I would like to send you an email, SFG. If that is okay, what is your email address? Thanks!

I know the movies, but I also know people who live around here. They live for this kind of thing.

Vera, our chickens got in there a couple times, but the deer scared them out. :-)

Sit outside on your porch with a rifle in your hands -- that ought to send the message.

We have a number of things that are not growing this year. Between the cool summer and too ample rain, root veggies are rotting and tomatoes hand forever without ripening.

I've been looking for a local source for things to can/dry/freeze cheaply so we can be prepared for a winter that the Almanac says will be much colder and snowy than normal.

Good luck.
