Farm Mystery

We have a mystery at the farm.  We've had 7 chickens end up dead.  At first we thought that it was Jack.

Doesn't he look ferocious?  Anyway, he's been known to kill chickens when he was younger.  In fact, he's killed 15 in one quick romp.  But, he's been really good with the chickens lately, as in half a year good.  He doesn't even look at them twice now.  I know, I know,  dogs will be dogs.  I wouldn't put it past him.  In fact, I scolded him about the dead chickens and then started tying him up whenever we aren't home.  And this is where it becomes a mystery.

This is Coffee, the Chicken.  We call her Coffee because she coughs all the time.  She's not sick, she still lays eggs, and no other chickens have the coughs. She just does. So we don't think it's because she is sick.   I figure she has something in her throat.   Anyway, she comes and eats and drinks out of Jack's dishes.  He doesn't mind.

Most of the days, Coffee actually stays with Jack.  Just hanging out.

So that's why we were wondering if it was actually him that killed the seven chickens.  Will the mystery ever be solved???????

So until next time,

Small Farm Girl, detective.....

P.S.  I'm trying new things on the blog so please excuse the mess right now.

It will depend on when it happens, during the day or night and what the damage is to the chickens. If they are gone with a feather trail, it is a big coon or a fox. Otherwise it could be a possum or skunk or rat. During the day it may be the dog.

I agree with Sunnybrook ~ depends on several factors ... weasel will kill a bunch at a time and just eat the heart as a rule, Raccoons mess them up , foxes take them down and usually leave a trail away, dogs tend to just kill them and they look rather wet not eaten ...if they are normal looking just dead no sign of wounds could be a virus.Let us know what you find out.

Are you sure it's not the fox running around the areas?

Same thing happened to my neighbor, and it ended up being a day-time roaming raccoon. Good luck figuring this one out. Doesn't really sounds like its Jack though, esp with having Coffee as a friend.

Sunnybrook....It happened around 6 to 9 am.

Willow....The chickens just had some feathers ripped out, but not parts were missing. I'm leaning toward a dog kill. Although, I'm not sure which dog yet.

Sandy....LOL! Possible! But I think Jack would have chased a fox away. Although, he can be lazy sometimes too. lol

TKAK...I didn't think it sounded like Jack either. But, you never know.....
