The Beginning, Again

Well, yesterday was the beginning of living a more homesteady life. I didn't start it Sunday because, well, we went out to eat with friends TWICE! YIKES!!!  Anyway, I started yesterday. I made breakfast from the eggs from out chickens.  Good start! hehehe  Then for dinner I made meatloaf from our own cattle, frozen corn from our garden two years ago, and blackberry crisp from the blackberries that we picked last year off of our land.

As we were eating it dawned on me. This food tastes better than anything that we could have gotten from a restaurant! Hubby said so too! Why would we want to go out to eat and spend $20 or more, when we can eat our own food for pennies? Hubby even took leftovers with him to work. Now we're talkin! hehehehe

Another thing I done was turn the tv off and do more things around the house. It's amazing what you can do when your eyes are not glued to the tv. Today I plan on cleaning out the goat barn/doghouse. I'll try to get some pictures of the little cuties. I have to get as many pics on here as I can. Hubby says he's going to take the camera with him to Atlanta when he leaves for his training.

He will be gone for 8 weeks. The weather man(the guesser) is saying that we are going to have the coldest and snowiest winters on record. Of course! I'm going to be freezing my butt off up here in the Tundra and Hubby will be all nice and warm in Georgia. Although, Georgia had their first white Christmas in 120 years! Ironic huh?

Well, this post has rambled enough.
So until next time,

Small Farm Girl, rambler.

Ain't( I know I know, not good English*wink*)that the truth about the food tasting better!

You know I have people( women- Uhum) that say it takes to long to cook from scratch. My reply is BULL! For example, yesterday Cortney had to work and Charlie had out a chicken for her. He'd thought ahead and thawed it in the frig for a couple of days. He wanted what he called Chicken Ball Soup( really it was chicken soup with cream of wheat dumplings) Although she didn't have enough time to get it ready( in as alittle over an hour til lunchtime), she cut off the wings and one breast and fried it for his lunch, then took the remainder of the chicken and boiled it, adding salt, pepper, garlic powder, chopped onions and herbs( thyme, rosemary, a bay leaf and basil), brought it to a slow boil while she was cleaning house and tending to laundry. Charlie's lunch of fried chciken, fried spuds and green beans was ready promptly at noon, the soup broth and chicken were allowed to cook for another 30 minutes. The chicken was removed to cool, for deboning, and the dumplings made and added to the broth. Once the chicken cooled we deboned the meat and added it to the broth and dumplings. So in a matter of two and a half hours two meals were completed. Then we got home and made enchiladas from scratch( torillas and all) and had the ready and waiting when Mike got home from work.
It does take some planning but it doesn't take any longer to make meals from scratch than to pop a store bought "prepared meal" in the oven or microwave and as you said the taste is so..... much better and it isn't full of preservatives, dyes and sugar. :o)

It sounds like you are off to a great start! Like others have said,it's just as easy to eat from "scratch" and sooo much more tasty.
As for turning off the tv WTG!! There's nothing on there worth wasting your time with anyway. I get so much more done these days since the tv has become pretty much history here.
Keep up the good work!!

Great start to the New Year! Now, to keep this up after hubby leaves town...

Haha! My husband works out of town all week and I have to stay motivated to keep busy. No tv during the day -- it's boring.

I don't usually cook for myself during the week -- but make up for it on the weekends when the boss is home. :)

There is nothing more satisfying than eating what you have grown..be it meat, eggs and/or vegetables.

The food just tastes better when you have the pride of knowing you harvested what you`re eating doesn`t it?

Just found your blog.

Funny, but your thoughts of hubby down here in warm Atlanta is WRONG! From looking at the date on this post, he's probably joined us in laughing at the weeny Southerners down here during our snow and ice storms. More cold headed our way too!
