See these little cuties? There are actually three of them. I have waited 5 extra months for them to grow up so that I could breed them. These pictures of when they were one month old. They are a lot bigger now.
I was going to breed them to this fine looking feller. You can't tell it in this picture, but he is a solid black New Zealand. He's a nice big boy.
Well, today was going to be breeding day. I put one of the young ones in with the Big Boy. They went around and around and around. Then......fur started to fly. I mean, big tufts of fur. The young one was tearing fur from the Big Boy. It went on and on and on.
I had to get them apart! So I grabbed the young one and got it out of the cage. As I was holding it, I had a thought. Maybe I didn't get the sex right with the young ones. So I looked. I turned it over and right there in between it's legs were..... Oh My Goodness!!!! That's not a girl!
I checked another one. SAME THING!!! I checked the last one...... I am officially revoking my rabbit sexing license. It was a buck also! I have waited 5 month and fed these suckers lots of food for nothing!!!!
I guess I'll be having rabbit stew pretty soon. Back to the drawing board. Looks like I have to wait another 2 months for my other three young'ens to be old enough to breed. Don't worry, I checked them again. Yep, they are does. Hopefully.
So until next time,
Small Farm Girl, license revoked

I'm sorry, SFG, but I just had to laugh. I hope the stew tastes good.

I've had pet stores and vets both mess up the gender on 4-8 week old rabbits. You just have to check again later; by 16 weeks things are generally much more obvious.
That's ok Fern, after I thought about it, I laughed too.
V I'm usually good at telling sex of a rabbit. I must have been off that day. :-)
Bwahahaha! I'm having a YEAR like that. Hang in there.
I understand your frustration.
I have raised rabbits off and on for many years, and have had the same problem numerous times. There were always boys that tricked me for a very long time. I have seen breeders online that claim they can sex the bunnies at only days old. I don't get how that could be possible.
I sure love having guinea pigs now. They can be sexed at day 1.
Kimberly
SFG,
Is your big boy okay?
Hopefully, next time things will workout and you'll get some females.
I hear the freezer calling a few of them males fur babes.
It seems like it's happening more and more. :-)
Kimberly, I honestly thought I could tell at the age u checked them. I guess I should have checked them more as they were getting older. Oh well, leason learned. :-)
The big boy is ok. He's just a little confused. I think he thought they were does too. Hehehehe
Well, at least you'll have a pot full o' rabbit stew, right?
As a young girl, I had an all black New Zealand male rabbit. He weighed 9 pounds and I would make salads for him, 'wash' him with a washcloth, put powder on him, brush him, bring him into my room. I had an orange rhinestone collar for him and would 'walk' him on a leash. Your rabbits are so pretty!
Right!!!
Thank you Joy! I may have to get the Big Boy a collar now. :-)
Oh my! We've never had THAT happen, but we do have reluctant does. You know that saying "breeding like rabbits"? HAHAHAHAHA. Sometimes we can't get our does even interested, much less bred. And we don't really know how to palpate yet, so we have to wait a month just to find out they were FAKERS!!! Them thar bunnies are going to make yummy stew, eh?
