It's times like these that I am really thankful that I live on a farm. This Thanksgiving we decided to make our Thanksgiving dinner a farm raised or local foods feast. I know, I know, a lot of you out there already do this. A lot of you do this on a daily bases. We don't. We want to, we just don't. So this Thanksgiving we decided to try it. It was WONDERFUL! We didn't raise turkeys, and no one shot a wild turkey this year, so the extra rooster got the bad end of that deal. LOL. But, he sure tasted good! We also had deer roast to make up for no turkey. heheheehe. Now, out of our garden we had mashed potatoes, green beans, and corn. I made a butternut squash pie.(Better than pumpkin pie!) We had blueberry crisp, apple pie, and cheese cake(made out of goat cheese). I also made some good sweet rolls from a recipe that my grandma used.
I didn't write this post just to give you a menu of what we had to eat. I wrote this because I wanted everyone to know how blessed I felt this year. I couldn't ask for a better life. My family, pretty much, is healthy. We all get along. And, the farm just keeps growing. Sometimes I have to pinch myself to see if this is all real or just a dream. Sometimes I feel guilty for being this happy when there are a lot of people out there suffering. I wished everyone could experience this feeling of pure happiness.
I think though, being happy also comes with age. Ten years ago, I would have looked at the things that I didn't have, not at the things I do have. And when I say "things", I don't mean just material "things." As I have gotten older I realize the things that really matter are things that you can't buy. A mind at peace is priceless.
If this feeling comes as we age, I can't wait to see what the rest of my life has in store for me.
I also want to say how thankful I am to have my blogger friends. You guys are awesome! We may never see each other but, I feel like I know you. If I haven't said it before, "Thank you for following my blog!" I know sometimes I don't blog very often, but I always know you are all here for me.
Ok, enough of my rambling. So until next time,
Small Farm Girl, thankful

So happy for you! Sounds like you had a great day of thanksgiving! I always love it when everything on our table is something that we grew or raised or is local to us! What a great feeling that is.
I really enjoy reading your blog too!
I think your dinner sounded really good!! wow! lots of yummy desserts. How nice you ate your own food!! that must feel really good!! ...debbie
What a nice post! :)
I too feel really thankful to be able to lead the life we do. I love it when I can make a meal out of food we produced ourselves. I know what you mean about age making us wiser! ;-)
my husband, my son and daughter in law, and i sat down to a table laden with simple hearty food served on the good china(collected over time from the piggly wiggly years ago) and the silverware bought years ago when our catholic (ursaline)academy closed and sold all their stuff.we ate roast turkey breast, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, sweet peas, tossed salad, buttered yeast rolls, cranberry sauce..i was full as a tick and needed to be rolled away from the table. for dessert we had blueberry pie ala mode. most all we ate was either on hand or raised/grown right here at home.but today is the day i await all year long..no not shopping..but the hot turkey sandwich fully loaded. i dont think that age alone makes us wiser. i think that a combination of factors that include good parenting, and life skills with experience help us age with some grace and wisdom just comes to us along the way.
so happy for you. I wish we had thanksgivin here in australia. I think we all need to remember to be thankful for the things we do have in our loves.
It all sounds wonderful! (psst. . . I was ignorantly happier 10 years ago hahaha!)
You should never feel guilty for being happy. ALL lives have their hardships, but I firmly believe it's your mindset that makes the difference. We're still experiencing nothing but frustration with buying our "new" little farm, and I've been mired in the frustation of it. Just this week after losing the second contractor we have to have to do the renovations, I decided to focus on the fact that my husband is employed at a good job, and that we're even in the position to be feeling this frustration at all. A year ago, it was still a dream. Be happy, my friend, nothing to feel guilty about. ~Vonnie
Thanks guys for the comments!
SLF...It is a good feeling! And, THANKS!
Debbie..It does feel good!
Candy C. LOL! I'm getting old.
Ano...Sounds like you had a nice dinner! I agree with you on the age thing. Wisdom comes for many different reasons.
Angela...I think ALL countries should have a Thanksgiving. You can share ours. lol
Phelan...Ignorance is bless! lol. (Don't burst my bubble! heheheehe)
Peacemom...That would be frustrating no matter who you are! I'm living in a basement because our house isn't done. I understand! lol. And, I'm trying not to feel guilty, just injoy.
Great post! I think it is a mind set. Some get better about it with age some get worse.. I know some older people that are never happy and I dont think ever will be till they look at what they have and appreciate it!.
Great post. I have decided next year I am raising turkeys... They are easier to pluck than chickens...
Wonderful post!! With age it is so nice to realize the important things that we really do have!
What a wonderful thanksgiving feast. I feel so blessed as well. I've never been so financially strapped as I am now, yet I have so much to be grateful for. Good food, good friends, good family. Cheers,
Happy thanksgiving! I'm up here in Canada, so we had ours a while ago:). Can't wait until I have enough food to put on a home grown spread. It would have been slim pickins this year, but we'll get there!!
