Back to Prepping

In my line of work, I have to make casual conversation with people. And me, being me, sometimes direct the conversation to the economy, the state of the country, and what could happen in the future. More and more people are starting to get a little antsy. They are thinking that it's going to get worse before it gets better.  So me, being a prepper and liking to talk about things like that, egg them on a little bit. I ask them what they think.

So far some of the answers are interesting. They range from," I don't think we have anything to worry about." to " I'm getting ready for Armageddon."  Either way that you look at it, you can tell that the US isn't in the best of shape right now. Prices of gas is going up. Prices of food is going up. Extreme weather all over the place. Plus, government parties are fighting  more than WWE wrestlers. (I'm just getting ready for them to start putting up the ring. Now THAT will make the debates a little more interesting.)

Anyway, over the last few months I have kind of lost my focus on prepping for whatever comes our way. I haven't been buying extras and putting them in my pantry. I haven't been making sure that I get the most of our garden. (Yes folks, I actually let some beans rot. I know, the SHAME!!!!!!head hangs low) I haven't been learning new skills on how to survive in case of an emergency.  I think I have been drawn into thinking that everything is just fine.

So as of right now, I'm back on track. I'm going to start buying extras when I go to the store. I'm going to start canning dried goods like flour. (Yes, it can be done folks. Look it up!) And, I'm going to start looking into alternative and natural medicines.

But some people ask me why I prep. My answer, "Why not?"  If I'm wrong and nothing changes in the world, we don't end up being snowed in for weeks, or we will always have jobs, I just have a bunch of extra things. lol.

But if I'm right, I'll be ready. Or at least more ready than some people. And, when I say I'm going to be prepping. I don't necessarily mean for WW3. I'm talking for things like ice storms, electric going out, loss of jobs. But, if something big does happen, I'm going to try and be ready for it too.

So, what do you think? And, what are you doing about it?

So until next time,

Small Farm Girl, back on track.

Im of the belief that we will have another GFC that is going to be worse than the last. With that in our minds we are refiguring our finances and off loading an investment proper and upping our pantry and upping our garden. I, like you, hope I am totally wrong but I am erring on the side of caution.

Great post. I really like your blog and went back and read it all from the beginning! You've a great sense of humour.

You hit the nail on the head...even though our garden did not produce enough to put anything up for the winter, it felt good to have fresh vegetables to eat - from the garden to the table. I hope next year (if there is a next year) to grow enough to can/freeze. Good point about canning dried goods...that is something I can definitely do now!

I am also one who likes to be prepared - an ounce of caution is worth a pound of cure.

Also, just wanted to let you know, I am bestowing an award on you. When you have a chance, stop by!

You have read my blog for a long time now and I just recently went back a year and reread it as well. I can say I started it as a diary of homesteading and country living. Blogging about animals, cooking, gardening and the everyday redneck county way of life. Over this past year I saw how my blog has changed from that into a prepping/survival blog. I never intended it to happen but it has. I have also seen the readers go from everyday country folks to preppers and survival folks. This past week I decided to mix it up some and do both. I saw more comments on the survival side than on the country living side.
I guess it goes to show that a major transition has happen and more people are aware of what is to come than what was in the past.
I had a email the other day and a reader asked why I was still building my homestead up when it will be burnt to the ground when "IT" happens. I just told them if a frog had wings it would not bump it's but every time is jumped and I am prepping for me and my family to survive where we are.
Thanks for the topic and sorry for the ramble.

We just did a major grocery run this past weekend to restock & even up our pantry supplies. We usually don't do the "huge" shopping but three or four times a year, so the buggy IS really full, but I almost threw up when we got the final amount!

Not enough to can, let alone fill the supper plates, so more grocery shopping is in our future, unfortunately. But better in the pantry than in the bank.

Keep spreading the prepping word!

I've been stocking up for about two years. I started with a garden when DH was still out of work, then got an opportunity to put away lots more when he was blessed with a job (YAY!) about a year ago. It's good to know that we've got enough to get us through most natural disasters, and maybe even help the neighbors some. Not so sure about if everything goes south and anarchy reigns, but I think we'll just have to trust the Lord to provide in that case. There's only so much you can plan for! ***carolyn***

The goal is to grow as much of our food as possible on our tiny plot until we can afford a bigger plot :-) This year we've been able to put up a little, but not nearly enough for a if-the-shit-hits-the-fan sort of time table. We have chickens and bees and will continue to stash away what we can. Like you, I am also intent on learning more about medicinal plants while planning for the possibility of small catastrophies as well as the "big one".

BTW-Just found your blog! I look forward to following your adventures as you share them :-) Cheers!
